Kentucky Man Fatally Shot in Gun Shop Accident as Fellow Customer Handles Firearm

A 50-year-old man from Kentucky was killed after a fellow customer in the gun store accidently discharged a handgun.

Chad Wainscott, of Worthville, was fatally shot at a shop at 1496 Whites Run Rd. in Carroll County on Saturday, June 29, at around 8:30 p.m., according to a news release from Kentucky State Police (KSP).

According to the announcement, state police have been investigating the gunshot death since officers were called to the area over the weekend.

According to the announcement, officers “located the victim inside the store receiving treatment by EMS for a gunshot wound.”

“The preliminary investigation indicates that a customer in the store was viewing a firearm for sale and manipulating it when a single round discharged, striking the victim, who was also in the store,” according to the statement.

“Other store customers immediately attempted life-saving measures.” The victim was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries,” the notification said.

According to police, a “individual in physical control of the firearm at the time it discharged is cooperating with investigators, and witnesses at the scene have been interviewed.”

According to the announcement, no foul play is suspected, and no charges are currently pending.

According to an obituary on the Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home website, Wainscott was “a beloved member of [the] Wheatley and Carrollton communities.”

“Chad’s warm smile and infectious personality will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him,” the statement said, adding that the victim was a father of two with a grandson he “adored.”

“Over the last several years he had just enjoyed working on the farm with his dad,” the message said of Wainscott, adding, “His love for the outdoors defined him.”
