A routine traffic stop in Marion turned into a pursuit and resulted in the removal of a significant quantity of drugs from circulation.
In the early hours of July 6, Marion police officers attempted to pull over a vehicle on South Washington Street. According to officers, the car initially pulled over to the side of the road, but then the driver suddenly accelerated and sped away.
According to authorities, the individual in question, Courtney Johnson, proceeded towards Lincoln Boulevard after heading east on 30th Street. It was reported that Johnson caused a moped rider to veer off the road.
According to the police, Johnson was driving at a high speed and ended up crashing into a tree near Tri-County Storage on East 54th Street. Johnson quickly fled from the damaged vehicle and sprinted approximately 60 yards away from the scene of the accident. That’s when he was discovered by a K9 from the Grant County Sheriff’s Department. Johnson was apprehended without any trouble.
The Marion Police Department reported the discovery of drugs in Johnson’s vehicle, which included a significant amount of methamphetamine, fentanyl, and a small quantity of marijuana.
Johnson is currently facing multiple serious charges, including drug dealing, resisting law enforcement, and criminal recklessness.
According to a news release from the Marion PD, it was reported that Johnson had a suspended license and was on parole for a serious violent felony involving possession of a handgun. He was transported to the Grant County Jail.
