ELKHART COUNTY, IND. — According to a news statement from Indiana State Police, a man from Elkhart County was arrested on Sunday after being on the run from police for 18 hours.
The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office sent officers to a home in the 57000 block of Pendleton Drive in Elkhart County on Saturday to check on the well-being of an adult man and his two children. At 9:06 p.m. on Saturday, police went to the house but couldn’t get in touch with the man. The man was at the house, armed, and making threats to hurt his children and police, deputies learned.
The Elkhart County Regional Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team arrived at 12:09 a.m. Sunday to clear the scene and try to get in touch with the man. When the man refused to leave the house, he pulled out a gun and locked himself inside. The event went on all day, and the Elkhart County Regional SWAT Team asked the Indiana State Police Emergency Response Team to help. After that, on Sunday morning, the Indiana State Police Emergency Response Team took over.
Officials say that many attempts were made to get in touch with the man on Sunday morning and into the afternoon, but none of them were successful. The Indiana State Police Emergency Response Team went into the house at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday and arrested the suspect. Ryan Snyder, who is 37 years old, was named as the suspect. A boy who was 2 years old was found dead in the house. A girl aged 4 was also found. She was treated at the spot and then given to a family member.
Snyder was taken to a nearby hospital to get checked out. He was then booked into the Elkhart County Jail. It is being looked into by officers from the Indiana State Police and the Elkhart County Homicide Unit. The case will be looked at by the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s Office, which will decide what charges to bring against Snyder.
