Arsenal face questions over Marquinhos signing after critical reaction to first summer buy – Tom Canton

Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Marquinhos from Sao Paulo. The Brazilian becomes the first official summer signing who will join Matt Turner, not yet announced by the club, in the team this summer.

He is thought as one for Arsenal’s future as highlighted by technical director Edu. The Gunners recruitment head spoke of his delight at getting the young forward to sign for the north London club.

“We’re delighted to have completed the transfer with Sao Paulo, as Marquinhos was a player we had been watching for a while. At 19, he is still very young, so he is a player for the future. We look forward to Marquinhos now joining us for pre-season, making his new home, and continuing to grow and develop with us,” he said.

As a new Arsenal player, there were, thankfully, plenty of people welcoming the new young starlet to the side. A player who, for many, is recognized far from the primary business the club will be conducting this season.

@TILIKI_OS:Welcome to Arsenal, Marquinhos. Hopefully, we get another success like Martinelli’s.

@boris_macy:The first of 3 new Brazilians for Arsenal this summer I hope! Can’t wait to see Marquinhos in action

@helder786: Hopefully this is just the start of many signings of course those that are needed to come

However, there was, in what has become an unsurprising and unwelcomed trend in response to the tweets from the club’s official page, a sprawl of hyperbolic and negative responses. Some in particular compared the Erling Haaland and Darwin Nunez stories that have dominated both Manchester City and Liverpool feeds respectively.

@Harley14Gooner: Can we now please get into some serious players? Or we just gonna be stuck in mediocrity for ever

@ELNENNYYY:Don’t care. Announce some proper players

@iam_philoearl:Liverpool Nunez, Manchester City Haaland, Arsenal Marquinhos. I won’t say anything. Welcome To Arsenal thou. Now sign proper players

@jyded2010: I don’t understand the hype with this guy. He’s not as good and fast as Raphinha. We shud be going for establish stars like Raphinha that have done it in the premier league already. Never gonna be excited for this signing

@AnaduakaPascal: Is this the kind of players we will use to compete in europe while others are buying haaland and darwin,, Edu will only wreck this club

@VictorLenin9: Why is arsenal not signing key players that are to strengthen the current squad that we have n players who have epl experience.. arsenal is not ready for UCL spot still..spurs are busy strengthening their squad here we are playing chess with a player who has never played in epl

Let’s be honest, this is not a signing that is going to define Arsenal’s summer window. This is an opportunity move to snap up an exciting talent that is available for a low fee.

Arsenal have priorities in the striker, central midfield and also, despite the Marquinhos move, the wide forward position. With Nicolas Pepe looking likely to move on, links to a number of wide players have emerged in the past week.

Football is a sport that creates rapid hysteria. Rapid reactionary responses will continue to dominate Arsenal in particular and with the frustrations of the past it is understandable why they exist. But to see some of the messages in response to this specific announcement just makes eyes roll.
