Porto attacking midfielder Fabio Vieira has agreed a five-year deal with Arsenal in a move that could rise to more than £34million after the two clubs reached an agreement.
Portuguese Vieira becomes Mikel Arteta’s third summer signing after the arrivals of goalkeeper Matt Turner from MLS, and talented Marquinhos who joined from Sao Paulo.
Record report that Arsenal will pay an initial £30million with the fee rising by around £4million in add-ons as the 22-year-old makes the switch to the Premier League.
Fabio Vieira joins Arsenal on a five-year deal from Porto for an initial £30million
The attacking midfielder was vital in helping Porto claim a 30th league title last season
Vieira will travel to London to complete his medical in the next few hours before signing a lengthy contract that will keep him at the club until 2027.
The deal is viewed as good business by the London club after they managed to wrap up a deal with the Primeira Liga champions for less than Vieira’s quoted release clause of £43million.
The attack-minded midfielder rose through the ranks of Porto’s academy before going on to make his senior debut for the first-team in 2020.
Vieira has received high praise from Porto supporters after he scored seven goals and registered 16 assists on their way to claiming a 30th division title last season.
He has racked up an impressive cv of trophies despite his young age, winning two Portuguese league titles, along with the Portuguese cup and the UEFA Youth League.
Vieira is no stranger to Premier League teams having faced Manchester City, Chelsea, and Liverpool in the Champions league over the past two seasons and assisted Porto’s only goal in their 5-1 home loss to Jurgen Klopp’s side.
The Portuguese prodigy will face stiff competition for a place in Arsenal’s midfielder as he attempts to force his way past regular starters Bukayo Saka, Thomas Partey, Emile Smith-Rowe, Martin Odegaard, and Granit Xhaka.
Vieira is expected to be available for the start of Arsenal’s pre-season tour of America that will see them take on Everton at the M&T Bank Stadium on July 16.
Arteta will be blessed with an abundance of attacking talent next season as Vieira looks set to link up with Bukayo Saka and others
Attention could now turn to trying to sign Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City for £50m
Attention will now turn to bolstering the attacking ranks at Arsenal, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang still to be replaced and Alexandre Lacazette leaving on a free for Lyon. Eddie Nketiah has also yet to pen new terms at the Gunners and could still depart.
Manchester City forward Gabriel Jesus is Arsenal’s leading target in attack, with a deal in the region of £50m expected to be enough to convince Pep Guardiola to part ways with the Brazil international.
Arsenal will raise the curtain of the new Premier League season away to Crystal Palace on Friday August 5 after the new season fixtures were announced earlier today.
