Authorities said Friday that a 33-year-old man gave an 11-year-old fireworks and told the child to set them off, which caused a lot of damage to two homes on Long Island.
A Nassau County Police report says that on the morning of July 4, Karamjit Singh reportedly gave an 11-year-old boy fireworks outside of his home in Levittown, New York, which is about 35 miles east of New York City.
Police say that after telling the child how to light them, the fireworks didn’t work right and set an attached shed on fire.
According to the report, the fire then spread to Singh’s home and a neighbor’s home, doing a lot of damage before the Wantagh Fire Department put it out. There were no reports of accidents.
Singh was caught and charged with setting fires, putting children in danger, reckless endangerment, and other crimes connected to fireworks. The eleven-year-old was given to a family friend.
The National Fire Protection Association says that every year, fireworks start more than 31,000 fires.
