Sony’s Madame Web Movie Rumored to Secretly Be a Different Spider-Man Film

Sony’s upcoming Marvel movie Madame Web, starring Dakota Johnson, is reportedly cover for an entirely different film set in the Spider-Verse.

Sony may be pulling one of the trickiest moves in cinema history with the upcoming Madame Web movie.

Entertainment reporter John Campea posted to Twitter what could be a massive piece of news if it proves true. “For a few weeks, I’ve heard whispers that the upcoming Madame Web project with Dakota Johnson isn’t actually a Madame Web project at all, but rather something else under the guise of Madame Web (even Deadline has alluded to it) but I haven’t found any proof of that,” Campea wrote.

It’s worth noting that while details on the film, including numerous casting updates, have all been reported on by the most reliable outlets and insiders, Sony has yet to officially announce a Madame Web film. The company did, however, create some barebones Madame Web social media accounts. While these would seemingly confirm Madame Web is coming to theaters, there’s still quite a bit of mystery surrounding the whole thing.

Sony has slowly been bringing more and more of the Spider-Man characters it owns to the big screen, with more on the way. But the rumors about a Madame Web movie that began in 2019 were the strangest of all, especially as major characters like Spider-Woman, Spider-Gwen, and Miles Morales had yet to make their live-action debuts. But in February of this year, Dakota Johnson was reportedly cast as the lead in Madame Web. The actor even seemed to confirm the news, posting a spider web emoji to social media after the story broke.

Since then, Euphoria‘s Sydney Sweeney and American Horror Story‘s Emma Roberts have joined the cast in undisclosed roles. Considering Madame Web is typically a character in other people’s stories in the comics, the fact that so many big names and up-and-comers have joined the cast in mystery roles has been a subject of discussion among fans. Goal if Madame Web is simply a cover for another film, then Sony could be stealthily trying to bring more Spider-People to its corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It’s also worth noting that the proposed film doesn’t have a director attached, meaning this could well be the rumored Olivia Wilde-directed Spider-Man spinoff that will reportedly focus on Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman. Regardless of what Madame Web ends up being about, the film is scheduled to hit theaters July 7, 2023.
