The Mother of a 21-year-old Son Threw Him a Party for His Birthday. Four People Were Killed in a Mass Shooting

Police say that a mass shooting at a 21st birthday party in Florence, Ky., killed four people and hurt three better.

CNN, CBS News, and USA Today all say that cops say the shooting happened at a home in Florence early on July 6.

At a news conference, Florence Police Chief Jeff Mallery told USA Today that police were called to a home at 2:50 a.m.

“When the police arrived, they could still hear shots being fired, so they went up to the house,” Mallery said. “When they got to the house, they saw multiple victims. Once they got inside, partygoers told them the suspect had left and gave a description of a car.”

Law officials then found the car, but when they tried to stop it, the suspect ran away.

Mallery said that cops think the suspect, 21-year-old Chase Garvey, shot himself after a chase and then crashed his car. Even though he was taken to the hospital, Garvey died from his wounds.

Mallery said that all three of the hurt people “are stable and will make a full recovery.”

It was Shane Miller (20) of Florence, Hayden Rybicki (20) of Elsmere, Delaney Eary (19) of Burlington, and Melissa Parrett (44), all of Florence, who died.

The party was for Parrett’s son’s 21st birthday. She owned the house there.

Mallery also said that the shooter “was known to the partygoers,” but he doesn’t think he was asked.

Mallery said that Garvey had been guilty of a crime.
The Courier-Journal says that Garvey, who was 18 at the time, was charged with raping a girl who was 13 years old in 2021. He admitted to having a second-degree illegal transaction with a child in April 2023 and was put on probation for five years.

Mallery said, “This is very sad because this is the first time we’ve had a mass shooting in Florence.” “My heart goes out to the victims, their families, the police officers who responded, and everyone else who was affected by this.”
